His first NHS appointment was as Oral Health Promotion coordinator in Somerset focusing on both the development of programmes for care staff and those in early years education. Michael then held a variety of NHS management appointments ranging from developing a community dental service, commissioning dental contracts and managing a dental hospital and school.

He is a past president of British Society of Dental Hygienists and Therapists and a trustee of the Oral Health Foundation. He is a topic matter expert to NICE on oral health related guidance and an external expert to OFQUAL. Currently Michael is lead for dental apprenticeships for Health Education England and is a dental workforce transformation tutor for the dental deanery in the South West.

Michael will be at the National Dental Nursing Conference 2019 podium on Friday 1 November demonstrating an understanding of apprenticeships and how they may be used to support the development of dental nurses.
