President 2019 - 2021

Jacqui Elsden Msc FBADN

Jacqui qualified in 1983 having successfully passed the NEBDN National Certificate and the Kings College Hospital Qualification in Dental Nursing. Following her qualifications, she continued her lifelong learning in the following areas: Vocational Assessment, Internal Quality Assurance, Radiography, Teaching and Mentoring, Leadership and Management, together with FGDP(UK)’s Certificate in Practice Appraisal and FGDP(UK)’s Key Skill in Reflection. In 2016, Jacqui graduated from the University of Kent with a degree of Master of Science in Advanced and Specialist Healthcare (Applied Dental Professional Practice) and was awarded the annual Dissertation prize for the highest achievement.

 

Jacqui has previous experience as an NEBDN dental nurse examiner, as an assessor and verifier for City & Guilds dental Nurse Diploma, as chairman of the NEBDN QA Committee, as a key skills assessor for the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology, as an MSc educational supervisor at the University of Kent, as BADN’s Education Representative and as a Professional Advisor to the GDC.

Jacqui has also been invited to lecture nationally and internationally including at the Royal College of Surgeons, England, at the International Association of Dental Research Conference (Barcelona) and at The Dentistry Show NEC, Birmingham.

Jacqui has worked within the NHS for the last 16 years and is currently employed by Health Education England (London, Kent, Surrey & Sussex region), as one of their DCP Leads for Dental Nurses. This role is varied and includes commissioning dental nurse training and education together with responding to the corona virus pandemic with regards to the whole team. Jacqui has been published in the Dental Press and continues to strive to achieve the best for dental nurses in her role as BADN’s current President. Away from Dentistry, Jacqui supports several charities, including a local cancer charity ‘Janes Wish’ and enjoys her hobbies dressmaking and gardening. During the first Lockdown, Jacqui joined the national group ‘For the Love of Scrubs’ and made a number of scrubs sets for local GPs and care home staff.

Chairman

Jane Dalgarno Bsc(Hons)

Jane started her career in Dental Nursing in 1986, passing the National Certificate in November 1993. Since qualifying, she has completed and passed post certificates in Oral Health Education, Sedation and Dental Radiography. Jane gained her Certificate in Education, in Post Compulsory Education, in September 2008 and holds the A1/A2 assessors award. Jane graduated with a BSc in Primary Dental Care with Kent University in July 2013. She works as a Clinical Workforce Development Manager for the Community Dental Services CIC, Bedfordshire and currently teaches on the OHE and Dental Sedation Nursing courses. She is an examiner for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses for the National Diploma and for the Certificates in Oral Health Education and Dental Sedation Nursing Awards. Jane is currently working towards an MSc. Her work for BADN as a President in years 2015-2017 has been more than the association and it's members could ask for and yet, Jane continues to contribute her wealthy knowledge and expertise to the association and it's members.

Treasurer

Joan Hatchard

Joan gained her National Certificate in 1988, and went on to gain post qualification certificates in Oral Health Education, Radiography, and Conscious Sedation. She became the practice manager of two busy private general dental practices. Joan started teaching the National Certificate course in 1989.  She also gained the FAETC and the Certificate in Education (FE), and holds the City and Guilds Licentiateship in Dental Nursing. Joan plays part as an examiner on the NEBDN Panel of Examiners for the National Diploma and the Certificate in Oral Health Education. In recent years, she has held positions on Council, first as the Chair of BADN Practice Managers’ and Receptionists’ National Group, and then Finance Officer. Joan is a BADN Fellow and received the 2013 BADN Award for Outstanding Contribution to Dental Nursing.  Her level of knowledge and expertise is a great contribution to the association as she works to ensure our association operates with a level of transparency and in accordance with our core values.

Education Representative

Anita Stanforth

Anita qualified as a 'Dental Surgery Assistant' at the Eastman Dental Hospital in 1978, additionally achieving a Merit grade in the NEBDN examination. She remained at the Eastman for the next eleven years, progressing to Senior Dental Nurse and finally to Dental Nurse Tutor, having gained the City and Guilds Further Education Teachers Certificate in 1981. Following the birth of her daughter, Anita took a career break before returning to work as a part time dental nurse in her local area. Anita gained experience working in a wide variety of dental practices, both NHS and private as well as working in a sedation/GA clinic.

Throughout her time in dental practice Anita felt that she could do more; and that she had somehow 'missed out' on the opportunity of entering into higher education. Her chance finally came in 2014, when she was lucky enough to be accepted into the first cohort of FDSc Advanced Dental Nursing and graduated in 2016. During the FDSc programme, Anita had learnt about the Mouth Care Matters project. She knew that the role of Mouth Care Matters Lead was something that would really broaden her horizons. She joined Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Healthcare Trust as Mouth Care Matters Lead in 2016, having trained at East Surrey Hospital by the inspirational consultant in Special Needs Dentistry - Mili Doshi and her team. During her time as Mouth Care Matters Lead, Anita was able to additionally work as a freelance speaker on Oral Health topics in multiple settings.

Anita expressed how honoured she is to have been chosen as the Education Representative on the BADN Executive Committee. Anita looks forward to supporting her colleagues on the committee and working towards improving opportunities for educational development and career progression for all Dental Nurses.

Chief Executive

Pamela Swain MBA LCGI FIAM FCMI

Pam worked briefly for the Home Office in London before moving on to Vienna, Brussels and Bermuda to work in a number of MNEs including CPC International, Hilton International, NATO and the Bank of Bermuda, followed by a year’s sabbatical at the Massage Institute of New England in Boston.  Pam began working for the ABDSA (as the Association was then called) in 1992 and was also Registrar of the Voluntary National Register until its closure in 2005. Pam is also Editor of the British Dental Nurses’ Journal® and a regular contributor to many dental journals, including “The Probe”.  She is a Fellow of the Institute of Association Management, the Chartered Management Institute, awarded the City & Guilds Licentiate in Management in 2005, and a Master’s in Business Administration in 2007. Being a part of BADN for over 25 years, Pam displays an outstanding level of dedication towards her role as a Chief Executive. She is a well known and highly valued individual amongst other dental organisations Nationwide. Her operations ensure the Association thrives and exceed the standards for our members.

Membership/Accounts Administrator

Shirley Lyons

Shirley began her career as a civil servant, then worked for a private company before running her own business. She then had a long career in retail, retail management and training. As a multiple license holder for a large supermarket chain she gained a qualification from the Wines & Spirits Education Trust and is also a NVQ qualified Assessor/Verifier. Joining the Association in 1999 Shirley has shown a great commitment to her role as she now oversees the membership database, Association accounts and other duties ensuring that our association performs smoothly on the day to day basis.

Val Foreshaw

As a child, Val emigrated to the United States of America and at the age of 16, returned to Rochdale. Married at 19, she has three children which she loves and cares for very much. In 1999, she moved to Fleetwood where she taken on a job in a nursing home. A back injury necessitated a career change and so Val has taken a course to become a Stores Administrator. In November 2009, Val saw an opportunity and shortly after became a member of the BADN Team. Since then her dedication to the job role saw many of our members describing Val as a highly valued member of the Association. Val takes pride in helping our members on a day to day basis and always exceeds expectations, ensuring our members' journey is second to none.

IT & Communications Administrator

Adam Skalski

After moving to the UK in 2008 with his family from Poland, Adam attended local High Schools and Colleges gaining qualifications in Financial Studies and Computing. In addition, He holds an NVQ in Leisure Operations and is also RLSS Qualified Lifeguard. Since becoming a part of the BADN Team in March 2017, Adam utilises his skills and knowledge to improve the association services, monitors and manages social media platforms and implements new ideas to provide more user-friendly experience to our members. Aside from his commitment for the BADN, Adam is also employed by the local council.
